Whether you’re a new service provider, coach, consultant, expert or author, you’ll need three things to succeed in business: a MARKET, a MESSAGE and an OFFER.

First, you must know the market type (the context in which you’ll do business) you are entering. This influences key decisions you’ll need to make about sales, finances, and market positioning when starting up your business.

Your options depend on which market type you’re entering:

An existing market has well-defined competitors and customers.

A re-segmented market is dominated by one or more key players.

A new market has no (or very few) competitors and it’s hard to define the customer.

A clone market is one where, due to geographical or cultural barriers, a business model can be closed and transposed.

Market type affects how you structure your business and how you’ll position, promote and operate it with respect to your:

1) sales model, processes, margins and sales cycle

2) start-up financial needs and ongoing capital required before you have revenue and your time to profitability

3) target market size, cost of entry, launch type to use, competitive barriers to overcome and how to position and promote yourself in the market.
